Proper Breathing

Oxygen.  Can’t live without it.  Yet I often see athletes misunderstand how to breathe during exercise.  Keep these in mind:

  • Take a deep breath during the easiest part of the exercise.  For example, during a squat, take a deep breath from your diaphragm at the top of the squat before descending to the bottom position.

  • Hold your breath on the way down.

  • Continue holding your breath as you push through the hardest portion of the lift (the sticking point).

  • As you pass through the sticking point, exhale and return to the starting position.

  • Repeat on each rep.
